Cacao : Food of the Gods

Exploring the ancestral origins of cacao, how we work with this ceremony and simple ways to carry its medicine into daily life.

Come close, hermana. Let me share the story of a gift so sacred it was once the only currency that mattered. Cacao is no ordinary seed. It is the life of the heart, a treasure carried by the spirit of the Earth to heal the places we have forgotten. The old ones called it the "blood of the earth" because they knew it carried the heat of the sun and the memory of the rain. It was never meant to be a candy. It was always a prayer.

For generations, our ancestors used Cacao to walk between worlds. They knew that to drink Cacao was to enter into a communion with the forest. It was used to find clarity before a journey, to strengthen the spirit before a birth and to bind the hearts of the community together. When you sit with it, you are stepping into that same ancient circle.

The Body Remembers

In our ceremonies at Medicine Wheel, we see how Cacao works. It does not force the heart open with a roar. It coaxes it like the soft light of dawn warming a cold room. It carries a physical wisdom too. It has a magnesium that settles the nervous heart and an energy that does not jitter like coffee but glows like a steady ember. It thins the veil between what you think and what you feel, allowing the blood to flow with more grace to the places that have grown tight.

Bringing Cacao Home

You need not be in the humidity of Tulum to keep this relationship alive. When you are back in the rush of the world, away from the smoke of our copal, you can still build a bridge.

To bring Cacao into your day, do so with intention. Do not gulp it while standing. Sit. Hold the cup and feel the weight of the sun that grew the bean. Add a pinch of cinnamon for warmth or a breath of cayenne to wake the fire in your gut. As you stir, speak to the spirit of the plant. Thank the soil of Mexico that held it and the hands that harvested it. When you drink, you are not just taking. You are remembering who you are. You are a being of light, of earth and of connection.

This is the gift. Cacao teaches us to listen to the rhythm of our own heartbeat. It reminds us that the heart is not just a muscle. It is a portal.

May your cup always be warm and your spirit always be grounded.

May the sweetness of the Cacao soften the edges of your day and may you always find your way back to the quiet wisdom of your own heart.
