The Mother of Tides
We call her Metztli. We call her Abuela. She is the oldest woman in the sky and she has a heavy job. She is responsible for dragging the great oceans back and forth across the belly of the earth.
Think of that power. She moves the tides without touching them. And because you are made mostly of water she moves you too.
The modern world tries to tell you that you should be the same every day. It demands that you be bright and productive from sunrise-to-sunset without pause. This is a lie that makes the spirit sick. You are not a machine. You are a body of water. You have high tides where your energy crashes against the shore and you have low tides where the water recedes to reveal the shells and stones hidden underneath. To fight this cycle is to swim against the current. To accept it is to float.
Syncing Your Rhythm in the City
The city lights are so bright that they try to erase the stars but they cannot erase the pull of the moon. You feel it in your sleep and in your blood. Here is how you honor the cycle when you live among concrete.
The Dark Moon: Go Into the Cave
When the sky is black the moon is resting and so you must rest. This is not the time to launch the business or run the marathon. It is the time to go quiet. In the old days we would plant seeds in the dark earth so they could germinate in secret. In your apartment do this with your intentions. Write down what you want to grow on a slip of paper. Fold it toward you three times. Place it under a pot with a living plant or bury it in the soil. Leave it there in the dark. You are planting the seed in the womb of the night.
The Waning Moon: Sweep the House
As the light fades the moon is exhaling. She is letting go. You must do the same. This is the best time to clean your closets and scrub your floors. Use the broom to push the stagnant energy out the door just as the tide pulls the water back to the deep. If you are angry or sad do not hold it. Cry it out. Sweat it out. The moon is making space for the new and you must do the same.
The Full Moon: Drink the Light
When the moon is round and white she is giving everything she has. The energy is high and the secrets come to the surface. This is the time to capture that light. Take a glass pitcher of water and place it on your windowsill or balcony where the moonlight can touch it. Leave it overnight to absorb the sereno the night dew and the cool energy of the star. In the morning drink this water first thing. Imagine the silver light filling your stomach and cooling your blood. It washes away the heat of frustration and leaves you with clarity.
The Ceremony of the Heart
At Medicine Wheel we gather under this silver light to share the medicine of the heart. Our full moon cacao ceremonies in Tulum are a celebration of this peak energy. We use the cacao to open the gateways of the spirit while the moon pulls our internal tides to the surface. It is a time for singing and for sharing and for witnessing the fullness of our own power. The cacao acts as the ground while the moon acts as the sky. Together they allow us to see our truth with love.
A Blessing for the Tides
May you love your own darkness as much as you love your light.
May you trust that when the energy recedes it is only gathering strength to return.
May you flow with the rhythm of the sky and feel the peace of being held by the same force that holds the sea.
You are water.
You are life.
You are whole.
