Frequently Asked Questions
-
How long is a Temazcal Ceremony?
The average ceremony is roughly 2 hours in length and includes 4 doors.
-
What should I bring with me to a Temazcal?
We suggest people wear comfortable clothing or a bathing suit. Since most of our temazcals happen close to the sea, we generally cool off in the Caribbean afterward.
-
What is a door in a temazcal?
In a Temazcal, each round of the ceremony is called a door. A door marks the opening of a new stage where stones are added, prayers are offered and healing deepens. There are usually four doors, each connected to an element and direction, guiding the journey from release to rebirth.
-
Are there any health conditions I should speak to a doctor about before participating in a Temazcal?
If you have high or low blood pressure, heart conditions, respiratory issues, are pregnant or have any serious medical condition, we recommend consulting with your doctor before entering the Temazcal. Your safety is sacred and it is important to listen to your body and the guidance of your healthcare provider.
-
Can I bring my kids with me?
We advise against bringing children to a community Temazcal due to the duration and heat. We have specific events for children that are shorter in duration and include fewer doors. You can also book a private temazcal that we can moderate the temperature to ensure safety of children.
-
Can I eat before a Temazcal?
Fasting for a few hours before the Temazcal helps your body focus on cleansing and healing. When your stomach is light, your energy flows more freely and you are less likely to feel discomfort during the heat. This simple preparation deepens your connection to the ritual and honors the medicine of the sweat.
